Teenager dies of tuberculosis after misdiagnosis

Korea - A 15-year-old girl has died of tuberculosis (TB) after doctors accused her of being 'lovesick', an inquest heard in the United Kingdom.

Alina Sarag's general practitioner told the girl her health problems were 'all in her mind' and suggested she see a spiritual healer after she suffered from breathing difficulties and repeated vomiting.

A simple phlegm test, which could have shown she had TB, was never carried out at any of four different clinics she visited, a clinical review of the case revealed.

According to her father, Mr Sultan Sarag, 'The doctor said to her, 'Did you meet someone on holiday? Are you missing him?''

Mr Sarag claimed the doctor, Dr Sharad Shripadrao Pandit, accused him of 'mollycoddling' his daughter and refused to test Alina for TB.

TB is a bacterial infection that primarily attacks the lung, but can affect other parts of the body.
