Holidays at home

In a condominium in Bartley, a group of young neighbours decided to hold a garage sale. The seven children, aged seven to 12, came up with the idea a few months before the holidays.

Main organiser Cherie Huang, nine, said: "We thought there's nothing to do during the holidays.

Plus we had a lot of stuff lying around. So why not organise an event to sell it to neighbours."

The children went door to door to promote their event, handing out fliers and putting up posters in lifts and around the condo grounds.

The items ranged from accessories and mobile phone cases, to toys, all priced below $8. Many residents turned up to support the sale.

The children raised more than $400 and donated the money to Touch Community Services, a nonprofit charity that helps children, families, people with special needs, and the elderly.

Touch Community Services general manager Edmund Wong said: "We are delighted to see the initiative and enthusiasm of the children in doing their part to raise funds for charity."

Madam Pauline Lim, a 38-year-old civil servant whose eight-year-old daughter, Janell Chia, was one of the seven organisers, said: "At first, we parents didn't think it would work out. I'm surprised at the outcome and proud of them for being so enterprising."
