Thai PM says legalising casinos good for revenue and jobs, eyes entertainment project
    March 29, 2024 5:06 AM

BANGKOK - Thailand's government is considering drafting a casino bill and if passed by parliament, it would generate more jobs and state revenue and allow for the creation of a mega entertainment project, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Friday (March 29).

Casinos are illegal in Thailand and the only gambling allowed is on state-controlled horse races and the lottery, though illicit gambling is commonplace, with underground casinos and football betting rife.

Southeast Asia's second-largest economy is considering allowing casinos as another means of drawing in investment and tourism, according to a study in parliament that was passed late on Thursday.

Underground casinos do exist in Thailand but large numbers of its people travel to neighbouring Cambodia and beyond to visit huge casino complexes, revenue that gambling advocates say could be kept in-country.

Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian on Thursday said the Philippines was to blame for the breakdown of relations, demanding its neighbour to cease what it calls were acts of infringement and provocation.

Russia's Lavrov tells newspaper that Ukraine peace plan is pointless
    March 29, 2024 3:26 AM

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview published on Friday, (March 29) said Ukraine's proposed peace plan was pointless as it was based on unacceptable notions like Moscow's withdrawal from areas it has captured.

Lavrov told the Moscow daily Izvestia that a proposed peace summit would not succeed until its fundamental bases were changed, including allowing Russia to participate.

"We are in any case ready to hold discussions but not on the bases of (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelenskiy's 'peace formula'," Lavrov told the daily.

Lavrov also said US proposals to discuss arms deals, uncoupling the issue from the Ukraine conflict, made little sense.
