UK PM Sunak to consult on tougher rules to combat 'sick note culture'
    April 19, 2024 2:57 AM

LONDON — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will look at tightening the rules for long-term sick leave in a bid to reverse a rise in the number of Britons who have permanently dropped out of the workforce.

Some 9.4 million Britons aged 16 to 64 — 22 per cent of that age group — are neither working nor unemployed, up from 8.55 million just before the pandemic, according to official data.

Over half of the long-term sick reported suffering from "depression, bad nerves or anxiety", although many said it was a secondary condition alongside their main health problem.

"We don't just need to change the sick note, we need to change the sick note culture so the default becomes what work you can do — not what you can't," he said.

US aid to Ukraine moves closer to possible passage
    April 19, 2024 2:50 AM

WASHINGTON — The US Congress moved closer on Thursday (April 18) to ending a months-long stalemate and voting on legislation to provide billions of dollars in security assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, despite bitter debate over the measure ahead of a weekend vote.

More than two months after the Democratic-led Senate approved a US$95 billion (S$129 billion) package of security assistance for Ukraine, Israel and US partners in the Indo-Pacific, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday unveiled House bills providing the assistance.

The hardline House Freedom Caucus came out against the security package on Thursday.

The Senate passed its security assistance package in February with strong 70 per cent bipartisan support, from both Democrats and Republicans, after rejecting a bipartisan border security bill.

FBI says Chinese hackers preparing to attack US infrastructure
    April 19, 2024 2:44 AM

Nashville, Tennessee — Chinese government-linked hackers have burrowed into US critical infrastructure and are waiting "for just the right moment to deal a devastating blow," FBI Director Christopher Wray said on Thursday (April 18).

Earlier this week, a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said Volt Typhoon was in fact unrelated to China's government, but is part of a criminal ransomware group.

Wray said China's hackers operated a series of botnets — constellations of compromised personal computers and servers around the globe - to conceal their malicious cyber activities.

Private sector American technology and cybersecurity companies previously attributed Volt Typhoon to China, including reports by security researchers with Microsoft and Google.
