Here's why flip flops and sugar cane juice are bad for you, if you're pregnant

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT WEAR FLIP-FLOPS DURING PREGNANCY

You know high heels should be put away during pregnancy. But did you know that wearing flip-flops during pregnancy is a bad idea?

"Pregnancy places extra pressure on your joints and feet. While flip-flops are flat, they don't provide the necessary arch support," explains Dr Goh Shen Li, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in S L Goh Women's Clinic at Mount Alvernia Medical Centre D.

As a result, you may develop plantar fasciitis (pain in the heel and bottom of the foot) if you wear flip-flops during pregnancy.

Ditch the flip-flops for sandals, which have straps that hold your feet in place and prevent tripping.

Better yet, choose well-fitted shoes that are round-toed and low-heeled, Dr Goh suggests.

The insoles should have a supportive arch to help minimise discomfort and absorb shock.

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE SUGARCANE JUICE DURING PREGNANCY

Sugarcane juice may be your favourite drink at the hawker centre, but if you're pregnant, you should stop taking it.

That's because it can be easily contaminated, says Dr Kang Wee, senior consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Kang Clinic for Women at Mount Alvernia Medical Centre.

"This may occur if hygiene standards are not maintained during transportation and storage, or during preparation, especially if the roller-drum crushers, chopping knives, filters and juice collection containers are not washed regularly," she explains.

"Its high sugar content also attracts flies that may contaminate the juice."

So if you want to drink it during pregnancy, make sure it's freshly prepared, and extracted in a hygienic and extremely clean environment, she advises.
