SHABU SAI

Shabu Sai is a popular chain of shabu shabu and sukiyaki restaurants. It has multiple outlets at various malls, including Causeway Point, Orchard Central, Changi City Point, Suntec City Mall, Eastpoint Mall and Westgate.

It's a casual dining restaurant that aims to be a crowd pleaser, with wallet-friendly prices being the main draw. They offer most of the generic shabu shabu ingredients, including tonkotsu and sukiyaki soup base, sliced beef, pork and chicken, and an assortment of vegetables including enoki mushrooms and tao pok.

Sukiya is another shabu shabu and sukiyaki buffet chain that aims to bring nabemono to the masses. They've got frequent promotions at their ten outlets islandwide.

Like Shabu Sai, they have most of the shabu shabu buffet classics, with some additions tailored to a local palate. So you'll find your sliced meats, vegetables, noodles like udon and ramen, as well as a selection of sauces and soup bases, including tonyu miso and kimuchi.

The prices are affordable but you have only 60 minutes to eat as much as you can, so get your chopsticks ready!

They've got a shabu shabu and sukiyaki beef and vegetable buffet with two signature dashi broths. You can also opt to have yakiniku (ie. grilled) beef. The highlight is surely their thinly sliced wagyu beef.

Shabu Ichi at Jurong Point specialises in Hokkaido hotpot, with soup bases like Hakodate shio and miso butter.

The prices and selection of meats and vegetables are similar to those at other chains like Shabu Sai and Suki-ya, although Shabu Ichi does have a wider selection of seafood, including snow crab legs, scallops and mussels, as well as Hokkaido soft serve ice cream.

Shaburi & Kintan Buffet is actually made up of two buffet restaurants in one. At Kintan, you can enjoy yakiniku Japanese barbecued meats, while Shaburi, their sister restaurant on the same premises, lets you enjoy individual shabu shabu hotpots.

Both Shaburi and Kintan customers get to choose from a selection of raw meats and fresh vegetables, as well as sides like sushi rolls and kimchi pancake.

Their regular Japanese shabu shabu lunches are very affordable, and you can also pay extra for a special shabu shabu lunch, shaburi wagyu shabu and special wagyu shabu. The all-you-can-eat shabu shabu meals have a time restriction of 90 minutes.

En Sakaba blurs the line between a bar and a restaurant. They've got four outlets, namely at Capital Tower in the CBD, Clarke Quay, Orchard Central and JEM. They specialise in Okinawa cuisine and their drinks menu is heavy on sake.

They have been known to host shabu shabu buffets but for limited periods only. At the moment, there is no shabu shabu buffet, but they do have a Miyazaki wagyu sukiyaki hotpot which costs $24.80.

En Sakaba has 4 outlets at Capital Tower, Clarke Quay, Orchard Central and JEM.

BLACK COW SINGAPORE

Black Cow is the chicest restaurant on this list, but also the priciest. The restaurant serves up Japanese cuisine with a modern spin. While they've got starters like truffle scallop carpaccio and wagyu mushroom, their speciality is their premium wagyu beef don bowls.

But if it's Japanese shabu shabu you've come for, you can add to yours cuts of Kurobuta black pork belly ($78 for 150g), Zuwai Kani crab leg ($168) and Hida Japanese waygu beef ($198 for 150g).
