14 escape with minor injuries in lift plunge

JOHOR BARU - A shopper sustained minor injuries and 14 others received outpatient treatment after the elevator they were in plunged three floors at a shopping complex here.

UDA Angsana chief operating officer Mohd Nazri Jamiran said that an alarm at the Johor Baru Angsana Mall went off at around 1.35pm on Saturday, alerting his staff of the incident, who immediately rushed to the aid of the shoppers.

"When my staff arrived, the lift had plunged from the fourth floor to the first floor and they quickly brought to safety the shaken customers who were still inside.

"The group was then rushed to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment," he said yesterday.

He said all of the affected shoppers were given outpatient treatment at the hospital, with one suffering minor injuries after being hit by a broken ceiling in the elevator.

"We will investigate the incident. So far, we have not found any problems related to the maintenance of the elevator.

"We have contacted the company in charge of the elevator to conduct their own investigations and have temporarily shut it down," he said.
