MALAYSIA - A total of 1,540 cases of scratch-and-win scams were reported to the Claims Tribunal since 2011.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hasan Malek said in a written response to Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) that 456 claims were filed in 2011, 598 in 2012 and 486 this year as of Aug 31.
"The ministry is consistently monitoring and conducting checks to curb scratch and win scams.
"An amendment to the Trade Description Act 2011, which was enforced since November 2011, states the exact penalty under Section 20, in relation to fake or confusing statements on contests and games, including scratch and win," he said.
Hasan said the amendment allowed the ministry to take more effective action towards those behind the scams who misled people by not offering the gifts they were promised or using unreasonable terms and conditions.
"The ministry also welcomes public cooperation in reporting any activities relating to scratch and win scams so that swift action can be taken," he added.
