KUALA LUMPUR - Eighteen cars were destroyed in what is believed to be arson at a used-car dealer's lot in Jalan Ipoh here.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said they were alerted about the incident at around 2.50am yesterday.

"We sent three fire engines, a tanker, and two rapid intervention motorcycles to the scene.

"When we arrived the fire had spread, but we managed to control the blaze by about 3.20am and put out the flames 20 minutes later," he said.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm R. Munusamy said two security guards first noticed smoke at the premises.

"The lot was used to store imported reconditioned cars for sale locally.

"Investigations revealed that 14 Honda Stream cars were destroyed along with a BMW X5, a Nissan Juke, a Toyota Estima and a Toyota Wish," he said, adding that the case had been classified as mischief by fire under Section 435 of the Penal Code.

Those with information should contact the police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or visit the nearest police station.
