ALOR SETAR - Two women students cheated death when a car and a motorcycle plunged into an irrigation canal at Simpang Empat near here in a chain-reaction collision involving another car.

In the 8.30am crash yesterday, Universiti Utara Malaysia student Siti Zulaikha Zolkeplee, 25, was on her way home from Alor Setar to Guar Chempedak when her car was rammed by another car driven by a 30-year-old woman.

The impact of the crash caused Siti Zulaikha's car to spin before it hit another student Nurul Atikah Alias, 20, who was riding from the opposite direction on her bike.

Both the car and the motorcycle landed in the irrigation canal.

Nearby residents who heard the crash immediately rushed to the scene and pulled both Siti Zulaikha and Nurul Atikah out.

Siti Zulaikha suffered minor injuries while Nurul Atiqah, a student of Jitra Polytechnic, was unconscious. Both of them were then rushed to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital. The driver of the other car was unhurt.

A witness Salleh Mohd Lazim, 43, said Siti Zulaikha was trapped in her car before she was rescued.

"She asked me to save her backpack as her laptop containing her assignments are in it," he said when met at the scene.
