"The motive is still under investigation and believed due to problems with debts," he said, adding that the 48-year-old managed the employment of foreign workers.
K. Saivarau, his two sons, S. Raghu Ram Rau, aged five and S. Sashrin Rau, six, along with his eight-year-old daughter S. Yamuna, were found in a bedroom of the house in Perdana Heights at 2pm.
SAC Mior said the two boys were found on a mattress, covered with a blanket, while their sister was found on a bed.
He said the man's mother-in-law, 60, had been living with the family after her daughter, V. Kamini, 39, hanged herself 20 days ago.
"She last spoke to them during dinner at about 8.30pm on Sunday before they went upstairs to sleep but woke up later when she heard her grandchildren screaming.
"Her son-in-law came down and told her that they were having a nightmare," SAC Mior said.
She woke up at 8am and did household chores till 1.30pm before she found their bodies upstairs, he said.
"She immediately left the house and informed her grandchildren's teachers."
The Kuala Muda District Police Headquarters personnel were alerted at about 2pm.
He said the victims were believed to have been dead for more than 12 hours. Their bodies had been sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Star, for post-mortems.
