ALOR GAJAH - The municipal council has issued a stop work order at a shopping mall here after part of a roof that was under construction collapsed on Monday, killing three workers.

Municipal officials were seen placing the stop work notices at the site in Pulau Sebang following the collapse at about 2.30pm.

State Human Resources and NGO Affairs committee chairman Datuk M.S.Mahadevan said at least 19 workers were injured in the incident when the roof in the mezzanine floor came down.

Three workers were confirmed killed and three others in critical condition.

Mr Razali Sabar, the local deputy police chief, said the deadly incident happened when part of the building's "roof structure" collapsed during construction in the district of Alor Gajah.

"Rescue personnel are now clearing the concrete slabs to find if there are any workers trapped under the rubble," he said, adding that most of the workers at the construction site were from Bangladesh while others were of Rohingya origin.

Malaysia, South-east Asia's third-largest economy, has always attracted a steady flow of foreign workers on the back of impressive economic growth especially in the construction, plantation and service sectors.
