MALAYSIA - About 30 Malaysian couples get hitched in Thailand every day, mostly involving polygamous marriages and those who could not get the blessings of the brides' families, reported Kosmo!.
Malaysia consul-general in Songkhla Mohd Faizal Razali said most of those who travelled across the border to marry were couples in their 30s from Perlis, Kelantan, Kedah and Perak.
He said the top reasons for couples to marry in Thailand were because the groom did not get the first wife's consent and couples whose marriage faced objection from family members.
"Some of the marriages were with foreigners from Thailand, India and Pakistan," he said.
Mohd Faizal said the quick and cheap procedures in Thailand were an added factor encouraging Malaysians to go Thailand to marry.
