3rd Indonesian killed at construction site

JOHOR BARU - An Indonesian worker was crushed to death by a beam at a construction site here where two of his countrymen had died of a similar accident months earlier.

In the latest case, Zaenudin Kartipay, 22, was working at Jalan Gaya 24, Taman Gaya, at 3pm on Thursday when the 60cm-long beam fell from the second floor and crushed his head.

Zaenudin had been working on the ground floor of the site, believed to be for a hypermarket. His colleague, also an Indonesian, said he felt a gust of strong wind before hearing a loud crash. When he ran to inspect, he found Zaenudin crushed below the beam.

Johor Baru (South) deputy OCPD Supt Abdul Samad Salleh said Zaenudin was unconscious at first. "He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Hospital Sultan Ismail," he said here yesterday.

The Indonesian Embassy had been informed.

In July, two workers, known only as Asmawi, 27, and Aripen, 24, were repairing a cracked beam on the first floor of the building when the wet concrete ceiling collapsed on them.

Both men died at the scene.
