4 dead in midnight fire in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU - Four people, including two children, perished in a fire that destroyed two houses in Sabah's east coast Kinabatangan area.

Two others, including a baby, suffered severe burns in the fire at Kg Lot M in Bukit Garam area in Kinabatangan district. They were rushed to the Duchess of Kent hospital in Sandakan for treatment.

A Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman identified the dead as Hajah Lidia binti Ibiti, 55, Sudirman Bin Ladising, 38, Mohd Syawal Bin Sudirman, four, and a two-year-old girl identified only as Yuyu.

Most of the victims are believed to be related to each other.

The spokesman said that the department had received a distress call at 11.58pm on Monday and immediately dispatched two fire trucks with 11 men to the scene about 11km from the Kinabatangan fire station.

The fire was brought under control at around 1am Tuesday.
