IPOH - An accident involving two trailers and two cars at KM257.4 of the North-South Expressway resulted in the death of a trailer driver and injured six others.

Kuala Kangsar OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Gaffar Muhamad said the incident occurred on the northbound lane, after the Menora Tunnel heading towards Kuala Kangsar at about 4.30pm on Monday.

"A trailer carrying asbestos from Kuala Lumpur to Kedah suffered brake failure and rammed into another trailer carrying bitumen in front of it in an attempt to slow down.

"This pushed the trailer carrying bitumen off the road and the lorry carrying asbestos then rammed into a Toyota Avanza and a Nissan Latio car before it overturned.

"The Toyota Avanza was carrying five people, who were returning to Perlis from a wedding in Pahang. The destination of the Nissan Latio is unknown," he said, adding that both vehicles were completely wrecked by the impact.

ACP Abdul Gaffar said the injured were rushed to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh and the Kuala Kangsar Hospital.

"The driver of the trailer carrying asbestos, M. Ukesparan, 31, died at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital and a 58-year-old passenger of the Toyota Avanza, Rokiah Awang, suffered a broken left arm.

"Ukesparan's father who was his co-driver, the driver of the trailer carrying bitumen and the rest received outpatient treatment," he added.
