600 left homeless after fire razes village in Tawau

KOTA KINABALU - More than 600 people were left homeless when their houses in a squatter area in Tawau were destroyed in an evening fire.

Villagers from Kg Tanjung Batu Keramat Laut, however, escaped death.

While some of them have been moved to a nearby community hall, others are staying with friends and relatives.

The fire, which started at about 6.20pm on Monday, was brought under control by about 10pm and was completely extinguished by 3.40am yesterday.

State Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohd Affendi Ramin said 37 firemen in three fire engines, together with the Civil Defence Department were dispatched to the scene.

No casualties have been reported so far, he said.
