Another village in Serian declared rabies infected

KUCHING - Kampung Saroban in Serian is the latest village to be declared as a rabies- infected area by the state government.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas made the order under the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance.

This came about after a five-year-old child was confirmed by the health authorities to have contracted the disease.

On July 3, the girl came down with a fever and complained of pain in the left arm and exhaustion.

She was warded in Serian Hospital before being transferred to the Sarawak General Hospital's paediatric intensive care after her condition worsened.

The girl was the fourth confirmed rabies case from Serian.

She was staying less than 10km away from three other confirmed rabies victims in the state.

Two of them - a six-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother from Kampung Paon, Sungai Rimu, in Serian - died from the infection on July 4.

The third victim - a seven-year-old girl from Kampung Lebor, Gedong - has yet to improve.

She is still under strict observation at the intensive care unit.

So far, the state government has declared five villages in Serian as rabies-infected areas.

They are Kampung Krait, Kampung Paon Rimu, Kampung Paon Rimu Bakung, Kampung Remun and Kampung Lebor.
