Anwar Ibrahim leaves prison to attend father's funeral

KAJANG, Malaysia - Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid his last respects to his father who passed away early Sunday.

Escorted by prison guards, Anwar arrived at his father's residence here at around 10.40am.

Datuk Ibrahim Abdul Rahman passed away at 1.45am, Sunday.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, former primer minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah were also present at the funeral.

According to PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, her father-in-law is expected to be buried at Sg Ramal Muslim cemetery after Zohor prayers.

Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison term after a five-man bench led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria found him guilty of having carnal intercourse with his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

On Wednesday, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said Anwar was officially disqualified as Permatang Pauh MP as his petition for a royal pardon by his family on Feb 24 had been rejected.
