PETALING JAYA - Anxiety turned into joy and relief for new parents Daniel Koh and his wife Rachel Thong, who delivered a healthy baby boy after an emergency C-section at the University Malaya Specialist Centre yesterday.

Although Ezra Koh, the couple's firstborn was due on Feb 29, they were hoping to deliver him earlier so that he would not have to wait to celebrate his birthday only once every four years, smiled Koh, 32.

However, the 31-year-old mother did not go into labour until shortly after 3pm yesterday.

During delivery, the baby's heart rate began to plummet.

"From 140 beats per minute, his heartbeat fell to 90 within seconds.

"Things moved very quickly after that. My wife was rushed into the operation theatre where Ezra was delivered via C-section and had to be resuscitated as he was distressed," said Koh.

"But all is well now - both mother and baby are healthy. In hindsight, it's a good thing we didn't wait any longer. We are thankful for a decisive medical team at hand, who moved swiftly to deliver Ezra safely."

In Bukit Mertajam, another couple - Tenaga Nasional Berhad technician Mohd Nazim Zainal and his wife Nur Wanishira Sambial Abdullah - celebrated their son's birth on leap day.

The baby, weighing 2.77kg, arrived at 5.49am at the KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital yesterday.

"He was initially due on March 21, but last week my wife started showing symptoms that she would be delivering.

"On the way to the hospital on Sunday night, we realised that our son would be born on a leap day.

"It's such a blessing for us," said Mohd Nazim when met at the hospital yesterday.

The couple, who got married in 2010, have a two-year-old daughter.
