Army man breaks basin in bid to escape from khalwat raid

MALAYSIA - A soldier broke the sink in his budget hotel room in Jalan Bagan while trying to escape a khalwat raid.

The man, in his 30s, had earlier refused to open his door when ordered to do so by enforcement officers from the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAIPP).

He was found standing outside his bathroom with the sink broken when the raiding party barged in to nab him and his female partner.

He and his partner were brought to JAIPP office for further questioning after the raid at about 3.30am yesterday.

Another man who heard the commotion was seen jumping down to the ground floor from his room on the same floor and fled on foot.

A check however showed that there was no one else in his room.

The raid was part of an eight-hour operation codenamed Ops Merdeka which ended at 7am.

Another soldier, also in his 30s, and his partner were also nabbed in another budget hotel along the same road.

Seven hotels and a rest house were raided in the operation, with the number of those caught for khalwat totalling 23.
