MERSING - A balik kampung trip by two friends to the east coast for Hari Raya ended in tragedy when they were killed in a head-on collision with another vehicle at the 12km mark of Jalan Endau-Mersing here.

Mohd Azlie Zakaria, 21, from Jerangau, Terengganu, was driving back to his hometown with his friend Mohd Arshaq Ismail, 22, from Kampung Lubok Besar, Kelantan, when the incident happened at around 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Mersing OCPD Deputy Supt S.M. Kumar said Mohd Azlie was trying to overtake a vehicle when he collided with a car on the opposite side.

Mohd Azlie died on the spot due to severe injuries while Mohd Arshaq died at the Mersing hospital, he said when contacted yesterday.

Meanwhile, the other driver, Suhaimi Jumri, 36, was believed to be on his way to Felda Sungai Sibol, Kulaijaya, with his wife Norfauziah Bahtiar, 36, and their three children - Nur Syafira Syazlin, 11, Muhammad Syafiq Ajwad, seven, and Nur Ain Adawiyah, three.

"It was a balik kampung trip for the victims in both cars and it is sad how the trip ended," said DSP Kumar, adding that the families of the two deceased had been contacted.

He said Suhaimi was being treated in Mersing hospital for severe injuries.

"We are still waiting for information from the doctors on the condition of Suhaimi's wife and children, who are also being treated at the Mersing hospital," he said.
