PETALING JAYA: Mothers are coming out on Mothers Day to speak out for stricter laws against pornography in cyberspace to better protect their children.

Mother-of-two Siti Aziah Yusof, 42, called for pornographic websites to be banned on the Internet.

"However, people have many ways to look for these sites," said the accounts manager.

"So, you could only impose a harsher fine and find a way to embarrass those who are caught doing it."

Another mother, Ho Yok Lin, 46, said it would be difficult to control children from accessing pornographic websites.

"As parents, it's important that we become good role models," she said.

"When it comes to the Internet, I think we should keep naked pictures of our babies private, because sharing them on social media might attract psychopaths or paedophiles.

"People think it doesn't matter, but it does," said Ho.

"When the children are grown up, they wouldn't like it too."

Ho was commenting on Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, 23, a mathematics student at the Imperial College in London, who was jailed five years by the Southwark Crown Court for downloading and distributing more than 30,000 extreme and disturbing images of child pornography.

Priya Nair, 37, now pregnant with her second child, said harsher punishments should be imposed on those spreading child pornography.

She recalled an incident where she saw the 11-year-old daughter of the store owner walking around naked when she was buying her groceries.

"Her parents were nonchalant about it, not knowing that they have put her in a vulnerable situation," said Priya.

"It was like routine to them."

In Taman Titiwangsa, a group calling themselves "Mothers Against Pornography" handed out to passers-by flowers as well as flyers on what to do if they knew of anyone distributing pornographic materials.

The women said they were moved to act following Nur Fitri's indecent acts.
