KUALA LUMPUR - The wives of the country's leaders and people's representatives play a pivotal role in motivating them to serve the rakyat better, says Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

"Behind every successful husband is a loyal and supporting wife. As wives of politicians, it is our duty to support and motivate our husbands and ensure they can better serve the rakyat," said the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

She also encouraged the women to improve their soft and inter-personal skills, which they should use in educating the public on current political issues.

"For example, you can organise entrepreneurial and religious courses for the people in the constituencies represented by your husband," added Rosmah, who is president of the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti).

"The focus should be on the underprivileged communities, such as single mothers," she said, advising Bakti members to treat the rakyat on equal terms regardless of their station in life.

Rosmah was speaking at the association's annual sports programme, which she jointly opened with Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil here yesterday.

The five-day event gathers 629 participants from parliamentary and state constituencies represented by Barisan Nasional to compete in a series of badminton and bowling matches.
