KUALA LUMPUR - Nine people were charged in three magistrate's courts here over offences linked to #KitaLawan rallies earlier this year.
In the first court, Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, PKR's Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin and activists Mandeep Singh and Fariz Abdul Talib @ Musa were charged with taking part in an unlawful assembly held from Jalan Tun Perak to the Sogo shopping mall here between 3.15pm and 6pm on March 28.
In the second court, Fariz was charged with another count of illegal assembly, along with activist Adam Adli, from the Sogo shopping mall to Esplanade KLCC on Feb 28.
In magistrate Ashraf Rezal Abdul Manan's court, PKR's Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang and party members Lee Chean Chung and Rozan Azen Mat Rasip faced a similar charge of taking part in an unlawful assembly in front of the Sogo shopping mall between 4.30pm and 5.05pm on March 21.
Back at the first court, former PAS exco member Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar was charged with uttering seditious remarks under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act at 4.30pm on Feb 21, also in front of Sogo.
All pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The eight people charged with illegal assembly were given RM500 (S$164) bail each with one surety while Fakhrulrazi was allowed RM1,000 bail with one surety.
The case involving Maria, Mandeep, Sim, Fariz, Chang, Lee and Rozan will be up for mention on Oct 16 while that of Adam and Fariz is fixed for Oct 19. Mention for Fakhrulrazi's case will be on Dec 11.
The case saw the public gallery in the courts in Jalan Duta here packed with party supporters and reporters, some of whom had to sit on the floor to hear the proceedings.
Also in the crowd were PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR's Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and Batu Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong.
All except Fakhrulrazi were represented by Datuk S. Ambiga, Eric Paulsen, Ramkarpal Singh and Latheefa Koya. Noorazmir Zakaria appeared for Fakhrulrazi.
