KOTA KINABALU - A fire destroyed at least three blocks of the 48-room Mimpian Jadi Resort in Tuaran about 40km from the state capital.
However, no one, including guests at the resort, was hurt in the 4.40pm Saturday incident.
The blaze destroyed the main lobby and office block, restaurant and hall of the resort that was built in the early 1990s.
Staff at the resort managed to flee when they saw the fire starting to spread from the restaurant area.
“We were cleaning up the dining area when we suddenly saw flames from the restaurant,” said a worker who declined to be named.
“There were no guests in the restaurant at that time. I saw the fire coming from the kitchen side and spreading very fast,” he said, adding that he and five other staff managed to get out safely.
He said staff were not able to save anything as the fire had spread very quickly.
State Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman Mohd Affendi Ramin said the department had received a distress call at 4.44pm from a member of the public.
He said five fire trucks and 30 personnel were rushed to the scene. The blaze was brought under control at 6.20pm.
“We are investigating the cause of the fire and also assessing the losses incurred,” he added.
