KOTA BARU - A 40-year-old man jumped off from the Sultan Yahya Petra bridge after leaving his car engine running.

The sales executive living here jumped off the bridge in what is believed to be a suicide bid at about 9.20pm on Saturday. His body has yet to be found.

Eyewitness Mohd Affandi Muhammad said he was on his way to his home in Pasir Pekan when he saw a man park his car by the road.

"The man switched on the hazard lights, came out from the car and went straight to the bridge railings. He managed to jump off the bridge," said Mohd Affandi who contacted the police and Fire and Rescue Services Department.

He said after that, the man's cellphone in the car rang constantly.

The man's mother, who declined to be named, said he was his usual self before the incident.

Darulnaim firestation chief Wan Mohd Shahrir Aziz Wan Said said the station received a distress call at about 9.30pm and rushed to the bridge.

"We conducted a search and rescue operation until 2am but to no avail. We will continue with the search,'' he added.
