KOTA KINABALU - Six siblings escaped being hit by a tree when it crashed onto their house while they were waiting for the school bus.

Their youngest brother was not so lucky in the 6.20am incident at Kampung Bakalau in western Beaufort on Wednesday.

Five-year-old Mohd Shaharell Ramlan was sleeping when the dead tree fell on their rooftop and that of three other houses, crushing him beneath it.

Shaharell was pronounced dead at about 7.20am, about an hour after being sent to the district hospital. His parents were too distraught to talk.

The boy's parents as well as five other people from the other three houses escaped with minor injuries.

A post-mortem carried out on Shaharell showed he died from serious head injuries, said Beaufort police chief Deputy Supt Mustaffa Maarof Mustaffa.

The other victims including two men and three women escaped with light injuries and have been treated as outpatients, he said.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohd Affendy K Ramin said the eight victims aged between five and 50 years had been sent to the hospital by their neighbours when firemen arrived at the scene at about 6.27am.

Work to cut the tree was being carried out, he said.
