A 10-year-old boy in Ipoh is fighting for his life after being hit by a stray bullet at about 4.30pm on Monday.
An off-duty policeman accidentally fired a shot while cleaning his service revolver.
The sergeant was at his mother-in-law's house cleaning the pistol when it went off, The New Straits Times reported.
The bullet hit Mohd Amar Mohd Azizi, who was playing about 40m away.
An X-ray taken later showed that the bullet was lodged in the throat.
The bullet has since been removed.
The boy has been warded at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital's paediatric intensive care unit for further treatment.
Perak Tengah deputy district police chief Leong Ah Kow said initial investigations revealed that the policeman had accidently discharged the pistol while cleaning it.
The pistol, a Walther P-99 automatic, and a magazine with 14 bullets have been seized.
Mr Leong said the bullet that hit Mohd Amar had been recovered.
Police have classified the case as discharging firearms in a public area.
The sergeant, who is an investigating officer, has been remanded and may face disciplinary action, the report said.
