KOTA KINABALU - A five-year-old boy was seriously injured following an accident involving a diesel train near Papar, about 37km from here.

Alexander Askona was following his neighbour, Hasruddin Halim, 24, to a nearby beach at Kg Mandahan and were driving across the railway when the four-wheel drive they were travelling in stalled on the tracks due to engine failure at about 9.15am yesterday.

Hasruddin heard the train approaching but could not restart his car nor escape in time.

The train rammed into the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Papar district police chief Deputy Supt George Abd Rakman said Hasruddin and Alexander were rushed to hospital.

"Alexander is receiving treatment for serious head injuries while Hasruddin was given outpatient treatment," he said.

The driver of the train, escaped without injuries and continued with the journey later.
