KOTA KINABALU- A riverside trip for two young siblings turned tragic when they slipped into the water and drowned.
Ruzaini Akmad, five, and Nursyafikah Akmad, four, were playing by the riverside near their house at Kampung Contoh Petagas in Penampang, some 15km from here, before the incident.
Villagers said they saw the children falling into the river and being swept away by strong currents in the 1pm incident on Wednesday.
They started a search after informing the parents.
Penampang acting OCPD Deputy Supt Azmir Abd Razak said one of the children was believed to have stepped on loose sand before falling into the river while the other may have jumped in to try and save the one who fell.
He said the villagers only contacted police for help at about 10pm after they failed to find the victims.
Nursyafikah's body was retrieved at about 6.30am yesterday while the search is continuing for the missing boy.
