IPOH - Without thinking of his own safety, express bus driver Mat Dan Mat rushed to help victims of an accident but his unselfish act cost him his life.
In the 5.30am incident yesterday, Mat Dan, 61 stopped his bus by the side of the road at KM190.7 of the North-South Expressway in Bukit Merah to help fellow express bus driver Habdul Ghani Jantan, 46, who was pinned in the wreckage and the other passengers, when a Nissan Grand Livina rammed into him.
Kerian OCPD Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan said the express bus had earlier crashed into the back of a lorry laden with goods.
"Mat Dan had stopped his bus by the side of the expressway and went to help those involved in the accident.
The driver of another lorry laden with cement also stopped to help.
"As the two Good Samaritans tried to see how they could help the victims, a Nissan Grand Livina rammed into them in the middle of the north-bound lane," Supt Mat Fauzi said.
The impact of the crash saw the deceased flung to the south-bound lane, where he was hit by several oncoming cars.
"Mat Dan died on the spot from serious head and body injuries.
His body has been sent to the Taiping Hospital for post-mortem.
"The driver of the cement lorry who was trying to help was also injured.
He received outpatient treatment at the Parit Buntar Hospital," he added.
Supt Mat Fauzi said a total of seven passengers in the express bus sustained injuries.
"They were sent to the Parit Buntar Hospital where they received outpatient treatment," he said, adding that the passengers were on their way from Kuala Lumpur to Kedah at the time of the incident.
Mat Dan's wife, Zurina Ismail, 45, said she was shocked to hear news of his death but accepted it as God's will.
"He was a loving and kind-hearted man, who always looked after the needs of the family," she said.
