PUCHONG - Despite the looming investigation by the authorities into a multi-level marketing scheme by purported Chinese millionaire Zhang Jian, it seems to be business as usual at the gaudy headquarters at SetiaWalk, here.
The office was filled with members milling about looking at products and chatting animatedly.
"I was one of the pioneer members," said a man in his 50s who had brought several of his recruits from Seremban.
"This system is very good - you can easily recoup the initial payment of RM300 with just two people under you.
"Then you also get member price for the products, and you can sell those for market price to people."
Another benefit that comes with being a member is the free meals at cafes and restaurants owned by the Chinese businessman.
"One is in Desa Petaling, members get free food and even free beer," he said.
When asked how much a member stood to make he said "Infinity, the amount is infinity!"
Another woman who had accompanied the small group echoed this, saying she had quickly recouped her initial investment.
"For me the pull is the cheap products and the free food.
"The cafe at SetiaWalk here has free drinks for members and food at half-price. And not just for me! I can bring my family to eat too," she said, adding she came all the way from Seremban just to use the facilities.
Among the products for sale are cheap DVD players, unbranded laptops for only RM750, birds nest drinks, and fake Tupperware merchandise with decals of Zhang Jian's face.
There are also cookware sets for RM250, power banks, cell phones, sanitary pads, pens, toothbrushes for only RM1, and backpacks.
The headquarters are gaudily decorated with awards, couches, cardboard cutouts and posters of Zhang Jian posing with hundred ringgit bills.
