KUALA LUMPUR - The Cabinet will decide next week whether to scale down events and celebrations leading to the 57th National Day.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said he would raise the matter for the Cabinet to decide.
"The National Day parade at Dataran Merdeka will be still be on but whether this will be scaled down to 50 per cent or 80 per cent or still at 100 per cent celebration. That is for the Cabinet to decide in view of the MH17 incident," he said when contacted yesterday.
Ahmad Shabery had in June announced a month-long celebration which would kick off on Aug 15, including Doa Untuk Malaysia (Pray for Malaysia), fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign and three concerts.
He said the Jalur Gemilang campaign in Putrajaya on Aug 16 would still go on but the fireworks display might be scrapped.
"There is supposed to be Konsert Harmoni dan Uniti involving Malaysia and Indonesia on Aug 24 which may also be cancelled.
"As for the Chow Kit Road 2.0 concert at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, we may instead have spiritual and religious theme songs being performed. We will let the Cabinet decide," he added.
A line from a song made popular by the late singer Datuk Sudirman Arshad has been picked as the theme for this year's Merdeka celebration.
The theme - Malaysia, Di Sini Lahirnya Sebuah Cinta - was lifted from the patriotic song, Warisan, which seeks to instil and express love for the country in conjunction with the 57th Independence Day.
The Merdeka celebrations will culminate with the commemoration of Malaysia Day on Sept 16 to be held in Sarawak.
