JOHOR BARU- The traditional Christmas carolling routine has been given a modern twist when a youth group surprised people here with a flash mob song and dance event.
The group of youths from the Calvary City Church turned up at the Johor Baru City Square complex yesterday and performed the musical act for the visitors.
Kicking off their performance with a percussion band playing an upbeat tune, the group attracted many shoppers, who promptly crowded around the main foyer to enjoy the show.
Shopper Melvin Chong, 33, said he thoroughly enjoyed the show, especially the singing by artiste Juwita Suwito, who serenaded the crowd with three classic Christmas carols.
"It was such a rocking performance.
"I did not expect to witness a Christmas show while shopping.
"The group was also very interactive as they invited the crowd to participate in a games session," he said when met at the complex here on Saturday.
Another shopper Chan Siew Nee, 45, who was with her family, said that although she did not celebrate Christmas, she felt that the performers gave a good Christmas spirit.
"My two daughters enjoyed the performance and even started dancing along to the singing," she added.
Juwita, who serenaded the crowd with her song Greater, said that Christmas is a time of giving. And sharing her songs with the people is her way of giving back.
"I love expressing myself through music and this is an amazing way to put a smile on people's face, especially since it is the festive season," she said.
The church's senior overseer Rev Benedict Rajan said that some 40 youths were involved in organising the show, which was held at two malls, Johor Baru City Square on Dec 21 and Sutera Mall on Dec 22 here.
"We just want to spread the joy of Christmas to both the Christians and non-Christians," he said adding that some 400 Christmas goodies were also given out to the crowd.
