PETALING JAYA - CIMB Islamic Bank has contributed RM1mil to Mercy Malaysia towards its mission to provide relief in conflict-torn Gaza.

The funds will go into helping the non-governmental body send medical aid, food and other basic necessities for those affected in the war-ravaged area.

According to the bank, the contribution will also be used to fund the NGO's collaborative work with the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Executive director and CEO Badlisyah Abdul Ghani handed over the cheque to Mercy Malaysia president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Perdaus during a ceremony at the bank's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Badlisyah said they hoped that the contribution would help bring relief to those in need.

"More importantly, we pray for the end of the conflict and violence because too many innocent lives have perished," he said.

"We are thankful for the unceasing work that these NGOs perform to provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians and refugees," he added.

"We hope that more corporate bodies and Malaysians in general will support these NGOs."

Present at the ceremony were Mercy Malaysia executive director Ahmad Faezal Mohamed and UNRWA country representative in Malaysia Hartini Zainudin.
