PETALING JAYA - No motorist or vehicle were trapped in the landslide at Karak highway and cleaning up works are due to be completed by Thursday morning.

Police said only three cars and a lorry were affected when they made contact with the debris. No vehicle was found trapped in the landslide.

Highway concessionaire ANIH Berhad said the landslide occurred on the westward lane between Lentang and Bukit Tinggi at KM52.4 due to heavy rains that had been falling since 5.30pm on Wednesday.

The landslide occurred at about 6.30pm when earth, trees and stones crashed down onto the lane and spilled to the other side of the highway.

For the safety of highway users, ANIH had promptly closed the highway in both directions.

"At that point, highway officials had reported that three private vehicles and one trailer were stranded in the affected area," it said adding that all the drivers were safe.

"Nevertheless, the fire department continued their search efforts as per standard procedure," said the concessionaire.

ANIH said highway officials are currently engaged in cleanup activities as well as preparing detours for highway users.

"It is estimated that the route can be used by early tomorrow (Thursday) morning," it said.

It added that safety teams were on site to help disperse the traffic and officials will be conducting detailed investigations to find the root cause of the landslide.

It said the public should not listen to hearsay and to refer to the company's official Twitter channel @LPTTrafik or contact their hotline at 095479111 or the Public Works Department's Flood Operations Room 24-hour line at 0326107727 for details.
