IPOH: A couple and their baby boy were killed when the MPV they were in skidded into a monsoon drain at 21st kilometre of the Sitiawan-Teluk Intan road in Manjung, about 100km from here.
Sairul Azuan Nadzim, his wife Azilina Abdul Aziz, both engineers aged 37, and three-month-old Muhamad Daris Iffat were found drowned in the 2.5m-deep ditch in the incident which occurred at about 4.30am yesterday.
They were on their way back home to Sungai Buloh in Selangor after spending time with their families in Manjung over the weekend.
Che Ma Mohd Zin, 71, said her daughter had spent a night with her on Friday and another night at her in-laws' house in Batu 9, Lekir, on Saturday.
"She was my youngest daughter and that was the last I saw of her.
"They came back this time to visit us because of the school holidays that started last Friday.
"She also visits us at least once a month. She is very close to her children.
"I even took care of her during her confinement for two months," she said at the Seri Manjung Hospital mortuary, adding that Sairul and Azilina have three other children aged between five and 10.
Sairul's family declined to speak to reporters.
Also present to pay their last respects were Lumut MP Mohamad Imran Abd Hamid and Pasir Panjang assemblyman Datuk Rashidi Ibrahim.
The couple and their son were buried at the Tanah Perkuburan Islam in Batu 9.
Perak traffic chief Supt Wan Jamil Wan Chik said that Sairul, who was driving, was believed to have tried to avoid a water-filled plastic barrier that was in the middle of the road.
"As Siarul swerved to his right, he crashed into the drain and his vehicle overturned," Supt Wan Jamil said.
