SIBU - A married couple looking for rotan in the jungle in Durin about an hour's drive from here were shocked to find the semi-decomposed body of an elderly man who had been reported missing on July 3.

According to the state Fire and Rescue Department, the couple found the body of Chiu Fong Ming, 72, about 1.5km from their longhouse, Rumah John Ujang, at about 9.30am on Tuesday.

They subsequently informed the deceased's children before lodging a police report, Bomba said in a statement on Thursday.

On July 3, Chiu had left his home at Jalan Telian in Durin with his daughter-in-law to look for wild fern, but they were soon separated.

His family reported him missing after he failed to return home.

A search and rescue operation was launched involving the Kanowit police and Bomba.

The operation was called off on the sixth day after he still could not be located.
