PETALING JAYA - Three people in a car died after they were crushed by a garbage truck.

The trio, identified as married couple Tan Meng Hua, 65, and Lion Ah Lowo, 58, and their neighbour Tan Aun, 63, were heading north on the North Klang Valley Expressway in a Proton Wira when the accident occurred at the 14.4km mark at around 6.40am yesterday.

Petaling Jaya traffic police chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sari said the trio were passing through an area that was undergoing road works.

"The car rammed into one of the traffic cones, causing the driver to lose control. The car skidded in front of a garbage truck and another car on the opposite lane," he said yesterday.

The three occupants were crushed by the garbage truck and died instantly.

The driver of the other car had a broken arm, while the garbage truck driver was unharmed.

DSP Mohamad Roy said police had yet to determine the cause of the accident.

"We have to consider that they were travelling early in the morning. The driver could have been sleepy or had poor visibility.

"A punctured tyre could have also caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle," he added.

The bodies were taken to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for a post-mortem.
