PASIR MAS: Diesel remains the main item smuggled out from the country across the Malaysia-Thailand border as their price in Thailand is almost double than that of here.
Anti-Smuggling Unit (ASU) director-general Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail said the unit had detected rampant diesel smuggling, especially in Kedah and Perlis. However, he said the situation was under control as the ASU members stationed in the states had been monitoring the activity closely.
Rahim said the authorities had detected many Myanmar illegal immigrants coming to Malaysia.
"They enter Malaysia through Thailand and will normally come from Sungai Golok," he said after attending the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration at Kampung Jenerih here yesterday.
Rahim, who is also the Home Ministry's policing and border security division secretary, said the immigrants entered through illegal jetties and "rat trails" along the border.
