KOTA KINABALU: A dog dug out the body of a baby boy only for an iguana to snatch it away at a beach on Pulau Gaya, off the city here.

The scene was witnessed by children who had been swimming close to the beach when they saw the dog digging out the remains from a shallow grave in Kg Lok Urai at about 2pm on Tuesday.

Police said that when the children saw the lizard pulling the body into the swamp area, they approached it for a closer look.

The lizard ran away, leaving behind what they came to realise was a baby, Kota Kinabalu City police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said.

The children immediately alerted family members who called the police.

ACP Chandra said the body was of a child about nine to 10 months.

Initial police investigations showed that there were no external injuries on the baby's body, which had been sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem.

ACP Chandra urged villagers in the area or any member of the public to come forward to assist the police in identifying the body and the mother.

So far there had been no arrest, he said yesterday.

Pulau Gaya, about 10 minutes' boat ride from the city, is mainly a Filipino refugee settlement.
