PETALING JAYA - Issues such as the 1MDB controversy must be put to rest and cannot be allowed to persist, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
"Any allegation of irregularities in the matters of 1MDB must be investigated in an independent, transparent and fair manner, and those responsible brought to justice.
"Umno's image cannot be implicated by the 1MDB issue," the deputy party president said in his message yesterday for Umno's 69th anniversary celebration.
The people, he said, were increasingly concerned about transparency and good governance, adding that this was their priority when deciding who should govern the country.
"Any issue involving questions of transparency and governance needs to taken seriously and if there is a problem, it needs to be solved immediately."
According to Transparency International-Malaysia, the Government should discard the practice of having the Prime Minister hold a second portfolio.
"Such a practice dilutes the principle of 'check and balance' within the Cabinet. It is just no longer viable from the point of view of integrity, transparency and good governance to put such a portfolio with the Prime Minister," TI-M said in a statement.
"By ensuring the Finance Minister is a different person from the Prime Minister, the rakyat is to some extent assured that a different pair of eyes and a different - and we hope an independent - mind can properly and objectively weigh the financial decision being made," it read.
Earlier, its president Datuk Akhbar Satar said the entire Tabung Haji episode showed how the Official Secrets Act (OSA) could be misused.
It said it had repeatedly called for a more open and inclusive government policy with regards to access to information, where whistle-blowers must be protected without the threat of the OSA being used against them.
