JOHOR BARU: A drug debt has been identified as the main motive behind the murder of a 44-year old man at a petrol station in Taman Pelangi here on Dec 17.
Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said secret societies here were involved in drug distribution activities.
He said four women and 10 men aged between 16 and 26 years old have been detained in Johor Baru, Penang and Singapore in relation to the case.
"We expect to make more arrests and Bukit Aman will assist the Johor police in the investigation," Comm Wan Ahmad said in a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent headquarters here on Friday.
He said it was an isolated case between gang members but had attracted wide attention and publicity after the video of the killing went viral.
Comm Wan Ahmad advised the people to have confidence in the police to solve the case but added that the police would need time to do it.
He advised netizens from spreading fake news on social media as their actions could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
Comm Wan Ahmad added that Johor Baru was still safe not only for locals but also for Singaporean and Indonesian tourists visiting the city.
