Drugs worth $2.21 million seized in major lab bust

GEORGE TOWN - Penang police scored one of their biggest victories this year when they seized drugs worth RM6.8mil ($2.21 million) during a raid at a flat in Jalan Tingkat Paya Terubong 5 in Taman Paya Terubong.

State police chief Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye said the narcotics team raided the drug processing lab at 10.30am on Friday.

"We confiscated 13.92kg of heroine, 20kg of syabu, 35.3kg of ecstasy powder, 33 litres of meth oil and 20kg of caffeine powder as well as equipment to process the drugs," he said during a press conference at the police headquarters in Penang Road yesterday.

Comm Chuah said they also arrested a man in his 50s outside the unit.

"We seized the house key from him to enter the premises.

"The man is single and has three prior records for theft, possession of stolen goods and car theft," he said.

Comm Chuah said the rented unit had been turned into a drug lab for a month.

"We believe there are more than one person involved and we are now looking for his accomplices," he said, adding that it was one of the state's biggest busts this year.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death sentence.

The suspect has been remanded until Friday.
