KUALA LUMPUR - An elderly couple was awoken on Friday night to find themselves, for a brief moment, as new parents again - a newborn girl was crying at their doorstep.
The baby is believed to be only a day old with the umbilical cord still attached.
They found her wrapped in cloth in a bag outside their home in Taman Ampang Indah, Kuala Kubu Baru, at about 10.30pm.
The couple, in their 70s, called the police and the 2.3kg baby was taken to the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital in the morning for a medical check-up.
The baby, who is believed to be Indonesian, is in good health despite being left outside.
Her umbilical cord was found to have been cut with scissors.
Doctors have started her on antibiotics in case of an infec-tion.
Hospital director Dr Jasmeet Singh said officials from the National Welfare Department had paid the baby a visit and was making arrangements to take her under its care.
Hulu Selangor OCPD Supt R. Supramaniam said the police had recorded statements from the elderly couple and were working on identifying the baby's parents.
"Those with information are encouraged to contact the police," he said.
