Elderly couple jump from 4th floor to escape hotel fire
One of the fire victim Rahimah Bilang,60, suffered fractures on her legs, warded at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital (QEH II) in Kota Kinabalu.

MALAYSIA - The couple were about to go to bed when they heard a frantic knock on their hotel room door.

People were also screaming "fire, fire".

Mr Harun Majid, 59, and Ms Rahima Bilung, 60, grabbed a few belongings and ran down the hallway, only to find the floor below engulfed in thick smoke. So, they ran back to their hotel room.

Mr Harun shut the door and grabbed a chair to break the window - their escape route.

They jumped from the fourth floor of the hotel in Kudat, about 150km from Kota Kinabalu. They landed on a zinc roof two floors below, The Star reported.

Ms Rahima, a mother of four, hurt her spine, broke one leg and fractured the other, while Mr Harun fractured his hip and backbone and injured both legs.

She said they both felt a sharp pain in their body upon landing and could only crawl to safety. They were then rushed to hospital. She said some residents fainted along the staircase.

Four other people were injured in the incident on Thursday evening.

The blaze also hit two furniture shops, a salon and several sundry shops.

Ms Rahima said at the hospital: "I cannot remember how we managed to get down to the roadside but we were soon attended to by medical staff who took us to Kudat Hospital."

Investigations are ongoing.
