Election Commission looking into proposal on BM credit

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission is studying a proposal whereby future elected representatives should have at least a credit in Bahasa Melayu in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination.

"Under the Federal Constitution and EC regulations, there are no requirements for election candidates to have a credit in Bahasa Melayu," said Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof yesterday.

The EC chairman was responding to Prof Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah's statement that the EC should make this compulsory for potential elected representatives, whether at state or parliament levels.

On Wednesday, Social and Cultural Affairs Advisor to the Government Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim was reported as saying that Ridhuan's suggestion should be supported as the country's leaders should be able to speak Bahasa Melayu well.
