KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Tan Sri K.K. Eswaran has defended his recent statements against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the former prime minister's attacks on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad issue.

While registering his respect for Dr Mahathir, Eswaran said he could not remain silent but speak up on the matter.

"All of us respect Tun as an elder statesman.

"However, today we have no choice but to speak up," he said here yesterday.

Eswaran, who was re-elected Maicci president for a three-year term last month, said he was merely being fair in his assessment of the 1MDB issue.

He noted that Dr Mahathir should practise what he previously "preached" about foreign media reports targeting himself and the nation's economy.

"Tun used to tell us not to listen to the foreign press who were undermining him and sabotaging the economy. But now he is telling us to listen to foreign media reports."

Maicci, said Eswaran, was giving its undivided support to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who "must be given a chance to manage the nation".

Earlier, Eswaran said Maicci committee members had met Najib and raised several issues affecting the Indian business community.
