PETALING JAYA - It was the ang pow of his life.

A 77-year-old former civil servant won RM27.4mil (S$8.7 million) in the Toto 4D Jackpot 1 on Jan 18.

He betted on the numbers 8483 and 1191 which were his car registration number and date of the Sept 11, 2001 incident in the United States.

"I saw the results in the newspaper and I could not believe my own eyes," he said.

"I rushed over to the Sports Toto outlet to check my ticket via the CheckWin machine and also with the customer service assistant at the outlet," he said in a statement.

The Sabahan collected the winnings with his nephew at the Sports Toto head office in Kuala Lumpur.

He said he would use part of the money to pay his elder sister's nursing home fee and save the rest in the bank.

The winner won under the System 7 ticket, which allowed him to bet on seven sets of numbers, leading him to the RM27,443,249.10 prize and an additional RM1,680.
